Welcome to
Chemical & Petroleum Engineering Department
Sharif University of Technology

The Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering was founded in 1966 at Sharif University of Technology. Based on a thorough background in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, the courses within the department have been aimed at preparing well-qualified chemical engineers who can address various challenges related to the chemical industries. In recognition of Iran as a major oil producing country, the department has developed industry related research programs in collaboration with major Iranian oil companies including but not limited to the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). Thus, the department was renamed the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in 2001. Presently, the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department includes 3    5     full time faculty members, 25 staff, and more than 900 students of whom 600 are undergraduate, 250 M.S., and 70 Ph.D. students.

Undergraduate Programs

To be qualified for the B.S. degree in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, passing a minimum of 137 semester units, preparation of a chemical or petroleum engineering project and undertaking a period of industrial training are required. The B.S. program usually takes 4 years to be completed. The general and basic courses offered at undergraduate level are as follows:

·          Humanities, Physical Education, and Foreign Language (20 units)

·          Basic Sciences including Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry (41 units)

·          Basic Courses in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and Related Laboratories (62 units)

·          Advanced and Specialty Courses (12 units)

·          Elective Courses (5 units)

Graduate Programs

M.S.

In accordance with the requirements of the Graduate program at SUT, in order to complete the M.S. program, each M.S. candidate must complete a minimum of 32 semester units, which include a research project of 6-8 units as the M.S. thesis.

Ph.D.

The Ph.D. program requires completion of course work with a minimum of 18 semester credits beyond the M.S. degree. The candidates must pass the qualifying exam and prepare a comprehensive Ph.D. thesis, which should be successfully defended. This department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in advanced areas of chemical and petroleum engineering including the following research topics:

·          Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology

·          Biomedical Engineering

·          Environmental Engineering
